You have done what I did not think possible, you have enhanced and increased my love for Laurel and Hardy – and for that you have my thanks. (JOHN ROCHE – Pembroke)
What I really liked about your book is that you managed to paint portraits of the two men that showed they could be human. I think you get more of a sense of them as people than from any other of the Laurel and Hardy books.
(JIM PEPPER – California)
Your book made me laugh and made me cry. How strange it is to have such strong feelings about two people I never met, but then your book brought them alive. What more could one wish for?
(TANIA M. EDWARDS – London W14)
Marriot’s first book, “LAUREL & HARDY – The British Tours,” has sold in over forty-five countries, and is still much sought after. His second, “CHAPLIN – Stage by Stage,” is acclaimed as the definitive account of Chaplin’s pre-film days. Then came “The Lighter Side of LAUREL & HARDY,” which sold out seven print runs. Next came “LAUREL and HARDY – The U.S. Tours,” which again bears Marriot’s hallmarks of unparalleled research, wit, and warmth towards his subjects. Then followed a second companion to “The British Tours” – namely “The European Tours.” In 2017 he gave us the complete history of Stan Laurel’s stage, music hall, and vaudeville appearances, pre-Hardy, in the book “LAUREL – Stage by Stage.” And in 2019 came the icing on the cake — the release of the film “Stan & Ollie” which credits “LAUREL & HARDY – The British Tours” as being its inspiration, and for which Marriot also acted as a consultant.
